Bacterial diseases in marine bivalves ArchiMer
Travers, Marie-agnes; Miller, Katherine Boettcher; Roque, Ana; Friedman, Carolyn S..
Bivalve aquaculture is seriously affected by many bacterial pathogens that cause high losses in hatcheries as well as in natural beds. A number of Vibrio species, but also members of the genera Nocardia and Roseovarius, are considered important pathogens in aquaculture. The present work provides an updated overview of main diseases and implicated bacterial species affecting bivalves. This review focuses on aetiological agents, their diversity and virulence factors, the diagnostic methods available as well as information on the dynamics of the host-parasite relationship.

Biodegradation of stored jet fuel by a Nocardia sp. isolated from contaminated soil BABT
Gomes,Edelvio de Barros; Soriano,Adriana Ururahy; Miranda,Rita de Cássia Mendonça de; Sousa,Maria de Fátima Vieira de Queiroz; Pereira Jr.,Nei.
The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of degradation of an autochthonous bacterial strain, isolated from petroleum derivatives contaminated soil samples against jet fuel hydrocarbons. The autochthonous bacterial strain was characterized as Nocardia sp. Evaluation of their degrading abilities was carried out by presumptive assays as redox indicator test and by observations of surface tension decreases in aqueous medium. Degradation of jet fuel hydrocarbons was evaluated by chromatographic methods. Experiments were performed in flasks at two biostimulation rates. A bacterial strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa UFPEDA 39 was utilized as a reference microorganism. The bacterial strain, identified as Nocardia sp, demonstrate high ability to...

Clinical significance, antimicrobial susceptibility and molecular identification of Nocardia species isolated from children with cystic fibrosis BJM
Betrán,Ana; Villuendas,Mª Cruz; Rezusta,Antonio; Pereira,Javier; Revillo,Mª José; Rodríguez-Nava,Verónica.
ABSTRACT Nocardia is an opportunistic pathogen that causes respiratory infections in immunocompromised patients. The aim of this study was to analyze the epidemiology, clinical significance and antimicrobial susceptibility of Nocardia species isolated from eight children with cystic fibrosis. The isolated species were identified as Nocardia farcinica, Nocardia transvalensis, Nocardia pneumoniae, Nocardia veterana and Nocardia wallacei. N. farcinica was isolated in three patients and all of them presented lung affectation with a chronic colonization and pneumonia. N. farcinica showed resistance against gentamicin, tobramycin, cefotaxime, but was susceptible to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and amikacin. N. transvalensis, which was isolated from two...

Evaluation and enhancement of heavy metals bioremediation in aqueous solutions by Nocardiopsis sp. MORSY1948, and Nocardia sp. MORSY2014 BJM
El-Gendy,Mervat Morsy Abbas Ahmed; El-Bondkly,Ahmed Mohamed Ahmed.
ABSTRACT An analysis of wastewater samples collected from different industrial regions of Egypt demonstrated dangerously high levels of nickel (0.27-31.50 mg L-1), chromium (1.50-7.41 mg L-1) and zinc (1.91-9.74 mg L-1) in the effluents. Alarmingly, these heavy metals are among the most toxic knownones to humans and wildlife. Sixty-nine Actinomycete isolates derived from contaminated sites were evaluated under single, binary, and ternary systems for their biosorption capacity for Ni2+, Cr6+ and Zn2+ from aqueous solutions. The results of the study identified isolates MORSY1948 and MORSY2014 as the most active biosorbents. Phenotypic and chemotypic characterization along with molecular phylogenetic evidence confirmed that the two strains are members of the...

Successful treatment of pulmonary Nocardia farcinica infection with linezolid: case report and literature review BJID
Shen,Tian; Wu,Lihua; Geng,Lei; Wei,Zeqing; Zheng,Shusen.
Nocardia infection is rare but potentially fatal. Therapy of Nocardia infection remains difficult. Linezolid, a novel oxazolidinone antibiotic, has proven to be effective, but clinical data are limited. Here we describe a case of a 45-year-old man with pulmonary N. farcinica infection following a liver transplantation. The initial therapy was trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, which showed no effect. According to susceptibility test, linezolid was administered with clearly improving the patient's condition. The treatment was stopped for anemia as drug related adverse event, and the therapy lasted for as long as 5 months. At the end of treatment clinical cure was confirmed and anemia reversed after discontinuation of linezolid. We also analyzed the clinical...
